Steven M. Hall, M.S.E., C.P.S.M.

Mr. Hall is a Senior Consultant who also serves as Director of Hazard Communication Consultations and Director of Research and Development. His professional activities include design and evaluation of hazard communications, analyzing and reconstructing product and occupational accidents, analysis of standards and regulations, and providing general safety and human factors engineering consultation. He also provides training in the development of product warnings and instructions.

Mr. Hall is the leader of the most widely applicable US standards for product warning labels, signs, and safety messages in owner’s manuals. He currently serves as the Chair for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z535 Committee on Safety Signs and Colors. Under his leadership, a new subcommittee has been launched to develop a standard for warnings in electronic media. Since 2002, he has been actively involved in developing standards for safety symbols, warnings in manuals, and product safety signs and labels. He is also a member of the U.S. TAG for ISO Technical Committee 145 on graphical symbols, which has developed many standards, including the ISO 3864 series for Graphical symbols — Safety colours and safety signs; ISO 7010, Graphical symbols — Safety colours and safety signs — Safety signs used in workplaces and public areas; and the ISO 9186 series for Graphical symbols for public information — Test methods.

Mr. Hall frequently teaches students and professionals about human factors and safety topics such as selecting safety interventions, incorporating safety into product development, hazard analysis, and developing safety information. He has provided lectures at a variety of corporate and industry seminars, and at undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education courses at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan, St. Louis University, and San Jose State University.

Mr. Hall holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and a master’s degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. At the University of Michigan, he served as an instructional assistant for Product and Occupational Safety Management courses in the Industrial and Operations Engineering Department. He has also completed Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training in Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards. Mr. Hall is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the American Society of Safety Engineers. He is also a Certified Product Safety Manager (C.P.S.M.).
